Wow. I'm all sorts of coloring fail lately. I keep thinking that these comics are going to take much shorter amounts of time than they actually do. I'll get on the ball with it soon enough. So much for New Year's resolutions, right?

Well, maybe some February will bring some newfound resolve to do this right.

In the meantime, happy inauguration day! :D

UPDATE 1/6/2009:
Sorry, everyone. I've been wrapped up in some personal stuff lately, so Dock Boys is going to be late this week. I should have it finished by tomorrow. Thanks for your understanding and patience.

-Scott

Well, ladies and gents, with all the holiday craziness and people coming into town (and me being a jackass) I wasn't able to finish this week's comic quite on time. Don't worry. I'll give it a good coloring job soon enough. I just wanted you guys to have a little Dock Boys action before Christmas (or during Hanukkah).

So happy holidays everyone, and I'll see you here next week! :)

So, I can't help but be disappointed by the X-Men Origins: Wolverine trailer. After that piece of crap last movie they made I was hoping this would possibly revamp the series. I was even excited when they announced Gambit would be in it. I freaking love Gambit.

But after watching the trailer, it just seems like an excuse to put Marvel characters in a movie and have a bunch of people come and see it because it's freaking Wolverine. Everybody likes Wolverine. Keep making shit movies with him and you'll make money for sure.

Don't get me wrong, the special effects look good, but that's all it seems to be. Just a barrage of special effects that surround everyone's favorite mutant badass. There's no real story here. Just some girl that dies and Wolvie's quest to kick ass. I mean, don't we already have a Punisher movie coming out this year? Why do we need Wolverine as the Punisher?

Ugh. I'm sorry. I guess I just was hoping for more.

Sorry about the tardiness of this strip everyone! But at least it's up within the day! I mean, measure that with the four months it would take me before! Haha! So count yourselves lucky! :P

Anywho, it looks like Vicky's making Mark an offer he can't refuse! Will he accept? What will this mean for the Dock Boys? Who ate my ham sandwich!?

The answer to these questions and more, next week on Dock Boys!

Well, in an unfortunate turn of events, I seem to have lost my sketchbook in which I keep all of my Dock Boys sketches before I scan them to ink and color on the computer. It shouldn't be too big of a deal; I'll just have to redraw a bunch of strips, but it does mean that you guys are all stuck with a wallpaper this week while I sort everything out with all of that.

So enjoy! I was originally going to do this for Halloween, but got distracted with, well, the actual comic. But regardless, we've got three sizes here: 1024x768, 1280x800, and 1600x1200. If you're looking for any other sizes, email me (scott at dockboys dot net) or @ me on my Twitter.

Have a good week, and I promise we'll be back to the story next week!

Hey there everyone! In case you haven't noticed the past couple of weeks, I've been making some changes to the strip.

First off, today you can (pretty obviously) see that I've changed the dimensions of the comic quite a bit. It's shorter in height, which I think gives it a more classic comic strip feel. I think it looks great and am going to be making all the strips around this size from now on, so I hope you like it. :)

Additionally, I switched fonts a couple weeks back. What you're now seeing is the Joe Kubert font from Comicraft at Comicbookfonts.com. There are a couple extra faces (regular, italic and bold italic) in this font, and there's also two different letter shapes per character. That way, if I use a word like "see", the "e" shapes will be different. Pretty cool, eh?

But I digress. All of these changes are leading up to some exciting things in the next month or two, so I hope to see you back here soon!

Have a happy Thanksgiving (if you're in the US) and don't get trampled on Black Friday! :D

What!? A new character?! Who is this woman? How does she know Mark?! What's going to happen next!? SUSPENSE!

Whew! That's exciting stuff!

In other news, however, Mr. Jay Buettner, my former Dock Boys partner in crime, tied the knot with a lovely young lady who is now Mrs. Ellen Buettner. Man, that's weird to say! (In a good, way, though.) It's crazy how old you can feel when you're still in your twenties. I have days when I feel like a cynical bastard with all these damn kids and their Yu-Gi-Ohs and their High School Musicals and God knows what else, I just can't shake that I'm not 22 anymore.

But at the same time, I most of my coworkers are older than me, and most are married with kids and stuff, so that makes me feel like the streetwise young kid with nothin' to lose. It's a strange place to be caught in, but I'll take it. I get to be mature and a kid all at the same time.

But I digress.

Jay and Ellen, you are the greatest of people. Kind hearted and always willing to help anyone out whenever possible. I could not possibly be happier for you guys. It feels like only yesterday that Jay and I were left to our own devices as the first two of the four roommates to move into the Dock without knowing each other very well at all. Luckily we had foosball and beer, and I'm so glad we did, because I am certainly honored to count you among the best of my friends. I think Mark, Pat and I all knew when we met Ellen for the first time that she was different (and not in the way Mark used to say it — about every new girl he brought home), but in a way that all three of us saw how happy you made each other.

May your love and happiness only grow for the rest of your lives. You two of all people certainly deserve it.

GO VOTE.

[ Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 | scott ]

Well ladies and gents, it's pretty lucky that we've got a comic this week. Heck it's pretty lucky I'm still alive this week. The real life Jay rolled into town with some of his Oklahoma friends for his bachelor party, and let me tell you, it was awesome. I used my Twitter account to record some of the Bachelor Party Quotes of the Night and Morning. It was a lot of fun. Jay is most certainly one of my best friends in the world and I wish all the best for he and Ellen's future.

[ Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 | scott ]

Whew! Comic's up only a couple hours late!

By the way, if you didn't know, I was interviewed on the Gigcast last week! Very exciting stuff. I had a fun time talking to JT and Scott over there, and want to say thanks to them for having me on. It was a lot of fun. For those unfamiliar, the Gigcast is the longest running webcomic podcast out there, so search for it in iTunes or check out their site.

The reason I was on the show was because I last weekend I had the foolhardy idea broadcast myself on uStream for 24 hours doing the 24 Hour Comics Day. I didn't end up finishing my comic, but I had a lot of fun giving it a go and want to thank all the people who dropped by and chatted with me. I'm a social person by nature, so in lieu of a comic shop to sit with a bunch of people, this seemed to work out pretty well!

Alright, I'm out! See you guys next week!

-Scott

UPDATE: Patrick wanted everyone to know that this is, in fact, the 100th Dock Boys strip! I haven't gone back and counted, but in times of crisis and counting like these, I don't disbelieve him. So crack open the worst beer you can find in the back of your fridge and raise a can to us!

[ Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 | scott ]

Ugh. Tired tonight. Going to watch some Chuck and Heroes and perhaps go to bed. Besides, I gotta get my rest for 24 Hour Comics Day this Saturday! I'll be doing 24 pages of comics in the 24 hours between noon (central time) this Saturday and noon on Sunday. I'll be streaming it (live!) on UStream, too, so if you're around, come stop by and check it out. Here is the link! Come on by!

See ya then!

Hello everyone! I want to make perfectly clear first off, that I don't think lesbians are crazy. Just unavailable. I can't help where these conversations go! :)

Anyways, I'm in the middle of a wallpaper for you all to celebrate the Dock Boys' 6th year anniversary last Friday. I'd hoped to have it finished by today, but this week's strip took a little bit longer than planned to finish. No matter, though! It's up on time and I'm pretty happy with it, if I do say so myself.

Anyways, here's a little preview of what the wallpaper's going to look like:

It'll certainly be done by next week, but to make sure you know about it the minute I put it up, you can follow me on Twitter! Fancy that!

UPDATE: Apparently the term "goonbag" isn't a widely-used one. All a goonbag is is the inside of a box of wine. Sorry for the confusion! :)

Well, Friends of the Dock, I think it's going to be a short little rant this week. My girlfriend brought home a Wii today from her parents, so I'm probably going to succumb to the temptation soon enough. We've got Wii Fit, Wii Sports and Mario Galaxy, but I might have to take a trip up to Blockbuster this week to rent some new games. So, if you have any suggestions, or really want to let me know what you think some underrated games are, shoot me an email at scott at dockboys dot net or @ me on twitter here.

In other news, this Friday, October the 3rd, marks the SIXTH anniversary of the Dock Boys comic! Way back when, in 2002, I embarked on journey with four of my best friends into the world of being cartoon characters. These were my roommates; these were the Dock Boys. Jay, Patrick, Mark and I have since become some of the best friends a guy could have and I am most certainly honored to call them so. I feel like somehow this comic has brought us together in ways that nothing else ever could have, and I am forever grateful for that. While I know that we would have been great friends otherwise, I think that this strip merely cemented the bond that we have. The Dock Boys are all members of Jay's wedding party in November, and through good times and bad, we all knew that we would be some of the best friends a guy could have.

So, let's raise a glass, guys. You might be at work or at home (or, hell, on your Blackberry), but know that I'm raising my glass to you. It may be a can of Diet Coke, but to heck with it.

Here's to another six years. Here's to us. Here's to great friends. Here's to always being there for each other, even when we didn't know we needed it. Here's to the Dock.

Here's to you guys.

-Scott

[ Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008 | scott ]

Hey everyone! Just so you know, this week marks the 8th week of consistent updates to the Dock Boys! I'm back in the swing of things and loving it! Speaking of marks, though, my brother Mark just got engaged on Sunday, so congratulations to him and his girlfriend/fiance Hilary! And I went to my cousin's wedding on Saturday, which was a blast and Jay's wedding is coming up in November, so that should be awesome too! It's just that sort of season, I guess. :)

Well, anyways, this strip "starts" (I use the term loosely) a "storyline" (another loose term!) for the Dock Boys! Things are being set in motion. What are they? Who will survive!? What kind of beer will they drink!?

Only time will tell.

[ Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 | scott ]

So, this week I've got something special for all of you! Instead of reading my incessant ramblings, I've got a little treat for you all. While I think the whole uStream concept is pretty cool, sometimes you really just can't beat a good ol' fashioned sped up process video! A number of people have asked about my process for the strip, so I think this video can answer some of those questions.

Enjoy!

[ Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 | scott ]

Whew!

After a frightening day last Thursday, the site is back up! And of course it has to go down on the day I get a link from the totally awesome Ugly Hill. If you have not read it, check it out! It started a brand new storyline yesterday, so you won't feel too far behind! Paul was kind enough to link to my blog, but I'd guess the damage from the site going down had already been done. Not to worry, though! We're back live and ready to kick out some more strips your way!

Also, besides Ugly Hill, there are some great comics that I've been really excited about recently that you might want to check out. Danielle Corsetto's Girls With Slingshots certainly keeps my days brighter. It's a hilarious daily strip that you should definitely bookmark.

Rene Engstrom's Anders Loves Maria is another one I've been very much enjoying. It's a little more on the serious side and does contain a little nudity in the middle there, but I'm totally hooked on the story. Do yourself a favor and start from the beginning, lest you be confused.

And to round it out, I gotta represent with We the Robots. While I myself hate robots with a fiery passion as a direct result of my belief that they will one day kill us all, Chris Harding has managed to turn their cold exteriors into fun simplified characters that really keep me entertained. Definitely check this one out.

Alright, off with you! There are too many comics to be read to listen to my ramblings!

Excelsior!

UPDATE 8/28/2008: Hey there! Welcome Ugly Hill readers! Thanks so much to Paul for posting my corgi sketch up at Ugly Hill. I hope you guys enjoy my strip. I update every Tuesday, so be sure to check back! You can also check out my inking and coloring processes on uStream and even follow me on Twitter!

Thanks!

-Scott

So, I've been listening to a crapload of Webcomics Weekly lately while at work, and the thing that I'm getting the most from it at this point is that as much as the other stuff like books, merch, advertising and all of that is well and good, the most important part of making a comic is just that: actually making the comic. You can't just start out and go totally bat-crap crazy and expect anyone to want anything to do with your comic if you update twice a year. That's freaking ludicrous. Right now, I'm trying to get the Dock Boys strip onto the Comicpress theme (if anyone might be able to help, please email me: scott AT dockboys DOT net), but that isn't NEARLY as important as actually making strips. People don't really care about that kind of stuff. It's certainly nice, but if they come back to your site and all they see is the same comic as the week before, well, they're probably never going to come back. I really need to just devote my time for Dock Boys to really just making consistent, fun comics. The rest of it can come later. There's no rush for that. I want to make this all work because I know I can.

Out!

-Scott

[ Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 | scott ]

SPACE PIRATES!

Yeah, okay, so not exactly a strip, but an update nonetheless! Enjoy a larger version of the sketch here. I feel like this could be a fun little foray into something down the line...

[ Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 | scott ]

Howdy, kiddos!

I'm really actually pretty damn proud of the look of this strip, so I hope you like it! I think this is where I'm taking the look from now on. Flat, fun colors. Can't go too crazy or we'll never see a strip up. I mean, it's been more than a month since I last had a strip, but that's better than a year!

Anyways, I didn't broadcast myself working on the strip because I was watching Lollapalooza live while I was doing it. I'm sure there's some sort of copyright issue there, so I wasn't even going to mess with it. But yeah, pretty phenomenal stuff going on over there. Sad I can't make it this year. I will most certainly not miss it next year, tell you what! The lineups just get better and better.

Oh, and yesterday was my birthday! Happy birthday to me! The big twenty-six. Man, I'm quickly leaving my mid-twenties. Scary thought. Before I know it, I'll be thirty, and after that I'll be dead. And what will happen to the update schedule then?! Well, it'll suck, that's what'll happen.

Anyways, have a good one! I'm outta here!

-Scott

[ Monday, June 23rd, 2008 | scott ]

Whoa! I'm uploading strips like a madman! Twice in a month? Who is this spry young gent!?

No, but seriously, it's great to be back doing strips again. It's a lot of fun. And it's nice to not really care anymore and really just do them for myself with no aspirations of "making it big" as I had secretly hoped in the past. It's not going to happen. I give up on it. Let's just have fun.

And speaking of fun, if you're not having any right now, hop on over to UStream and you can see my process for inking and coloring the comic. I've started a vlog there where you can watch me pretty much do everything involved in making the comic once it's on the computer. And if you follow me on twitter, I'll be sending updates as to when I'll be streaming as well.

Alright, kiddies. I'm out!

D

[ Saturday, June 7th, 2008 | scott ]

Bwa ha ha!

I've returned! Sort of. I must apologize for the crappiness of the above strip. I got so sick of this Mark storyline, I didn't even want to bother coloring or even inking this one. I just gave up. So, yeah. This is it. The end of the Mark is emo storyline. There was supposed to be more, but I'm sick of it, so it ends here. Dock Boys is now going to be scaled back a bit, so I don't kill myself working on new comics. Things are going to different, but I hope you still like it. And, let's face it, it doesn't really matter at this point. I feel like I'm starting fresh. After about a year without an update, I think I can come back with a clean slate and dive into this again. I've already got one script that all sketched out and ready to roll, so that's a plus. Hopefully it won't take another year.

Alright kids. Thanks for checking back. We really CAN start again.

-Scott

[ Tuesday, October 16th, 2007 | scott ]

Yeah, yeah. I know. I know. It's been seven freaking months. You all thought there would never be another Dock Boys. Well, you were wrong. Don't get me wrong. I would have believed you at certain points, but here we are. Another comic. That's a whole freaking three this year. Woot.

Well, hopefully I'll have time to get a comic or two more out this year, but I'm not promising anything anymore. I really like doing the comic, but I'm really pretty busy these days. Thanks for sticking with us after such a long time. We really appreciate it.

Oh, and I started an art blog, too, by the way. Just sketches and stuff from when I'm bored at work. So, yeah, bookmark that shit too. It'll be updated more often than Dock Boys, that's for sure.

Hasta,

-Scott

[ Tuesday, March 20th, 2007 | scott ]

And in a startling turn of events, the Dock Boys return! Sorry for making everyone wait so long for this one... I've been super crazy busy lately. I got a new job at an advertising agency called Muller + Company as an interactive designer. I started in November and it's working out great. I've got a new apartment just off the Plaza across the street from where I work, and a brand new painting from my buddy Paul. Yep. Things were looking up.

But without doing the Dock Boys comic, something was still missing... And so here I am, back at the wheel. And while I'm not going to make promises of a new strip every week like before, I will promise to never leave you guys hanging that long again. I mean, really. Five months without a real new strip is ridiculous.

So thanks for coming back. I know I lost a lot of people along the way, but we can build it up again.

And thanks for listening.

Dead tired. Crazy weekend. Jay was in town. Good time has by all. I still have a moustache from Saturday, if you can gauge the weekend by that.

Right now I need sleep though. Badly. Will continue the Mark storyline soon. Next week. I'm going to try to set a record for, like, the past two years and have two comics in a week. Who wants to take bets?

Pat went to the Now It's Overhead Show tonight. I should have gone but I was working til midnight. I hope he dressed up for it. He should have a review of something up later.

Hasta,

PS: Bonus points for anyone who caught the reference to the running witch character. You get to buy yourself a cookie.

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us. Happy birthday to uu-uss! Happy birthday to us.

And many more....

Yes, that's right, on October 3rd, 2002, the Dock Boys comic strip debuted in the University of Kansas newspaper, the University Daily Kansan. It's been a long road here, four years later, still doing the comic, but it's really all been totally worth it. Granted, I need to put more time into getting those updates out sooner, but I definately think that the whole "you've been doing this forever, so you should either shit or get off the pot" mentality has set in as far as making this something that I really want to persue.

And, let's face it, the Dock Boys would be nothing without the love and support our fans. So, thanks everyone for checking the site for updates, bugging me about wanting to be in a comic, and just being all around awesome. We've been here for four years only by your support, and here's hoping for four more.

Hasta,

Wow. I suck at updating. I suck hard.

Anyways, I wanted to give another plug to the Dock Boys MySpace page. It has really been a great tool for getting people to find out about the comic, and also to come in contact with a whole bunch of great artists and comic writers as well. So if you're not a friend of the Dock, well, you should be.

Oh, and we've been using Google Analytics to moniter traffic on the site, and I just want to know: who is this guy?

Yeah, you. Number five on that list. Why did you come here? And really, how did you like the site? Is it exactly what you hoped for? What can I do to improve your viewing experience? Perhaps more sex aliens? Alright. Consider it done.

Whoo! Another comic! WhooooO!

I'd first like to say happy birthday to my Dad, because it is, in fact his birthday today. Not that today's strip had anything to do with that, but just so you know, if you know my dad, drop him a MySpace message saying happy birthday. And yes, my dad is on MySpace. I don't know why, but it's kind of funny all the same.

Oh, and if you're a new reader that has no idea what's going on in this strip or why, you can start this storyline from it's inception here.

And I'm probably going to be taking those wallpaper strips out of archives soon and putting them in the stuff section, just so there's some semblance of flow through the archives. Wow, I'm tired and I'm not sure if I can spell.

Alright, I'll see you guys later,

"You're crazy, Flash Gordon!"

Wow. I really love campy 80's super hero movies, although I'm not sure if I should be so bold as to put Flash Gordon in a catagory with heroes with actual powers. But if crazy billionare Bruce Wayne gets to be in the club, by golly, so does Flash Gordon. He's nuts. His whole 1980 sci-fi adventure (which I watched on Tivo while coloring this) may be one of the weirdest, trippiest movies I've ever half paid attention to. Not to mention the inclusion of Timothy Dalton in the cast, who many of you might remember from his days as the worst James Bond in history, but also a classic villian in one of my favorite childhood movies, The Rocketeer.

Ah... Good times. So, I guess my point is, well, watch Flash Gordon. It's full of surprises. And absolute ridiculousness.

"Flash Gordon, you're crazy!"

Yikes! Six Six Two Thousand Six! What a great day to wait until to upload a new comic. There's a part of me that feels like, of all days, the world should end today. But then there's another part that smacks the first part and is all like, "do you really think any diety would go off of your crazy western calender? You're an idiot!" And then the first part says, "But, but..." and the other part's all like, "You shut your face!"

Aaaaaanyways, it's late and I'm a bit loopy. But as you can see, the new web site is up as well. Everything should be working smoothly, at least it should be. I still have to upload the new Reader's Guide section. That's going to be in Flash, so if you don't have it, well you should get it anyways. I mean, how do you live? How do you live?!

Right. So, if you find anything that goes horribly wrong with the site email me. All of the Dock Boys now have bad ass @dockboys.net email addresses from our close, personal friends at Gmail. I really do love those guys.

Alright. I'll shut up. Enjoy the strip and we'll see you later!

Bah. I wrote a big long rant, and all of a sudden, my computer turned itself off. Like it just lost power or something. How annoying.

So annoying, in fact, that I just went to work and didn't try to post again until now. Nearly eight o' clock.

Well, anyways, basically what I said in my deleted rant was that hopefully in the next week or two you'll be seeing some changes around the Dock Boys web site. I've been doing some reworking of the whole thing, and it should be up soon. So, begin your salavations now. I know you can't wait.

Hello, there!

Well, as you can see, we're back, with the continuation of Mark's dating "lessons!" We've got a couple more strips in store for you here in this storyline, so stay tuned to your internet, or whatnot.

And, in case you missed it, Pat uploaded an interesting new rant for the last comic a bit later than it went up, so check it out, too.

Also, I had started to redesign the entire Dock Boys web site, but I think I'm going to start over. The design I was working on was pretty boring, so I'm going to try to spice it up, perhaps with a little crushed red pepper or some habeneros. Maybe some banana peppers.

But regardless of my choice of spices, if there's anything you think the site could use that we don't have, or perhaps that we do have, but don't do well, shoot me an email to let me know. I'll do my best to include it.

For those of you who don't know, Sam and Fuzzy is one of my favorite online comics about a normal guy who fate has stuck with a deranged little bowtied bear. From witty writing to gorgeous art, the strip has been constantly great since I started reading it four years ago. Or was it only three? It's been up a while.

In any case, this is my submission to a contest they're having over there. You see, Sam, the main character, has been missing for some time now, and now the readers get to take a stab at where he could be. It's pretty fun to see what everyone else his come up with, but hopefully, I'll win. Bwa ha ha!

Anyways, I hope to have a new comic up next week to jump into a pretty fun new storyline.

Hasta pasta,

Well that wasn't too long a break, was it? Only what? Two weeks? That's light speed in comparison to the usual update schedule. I'm like the freaking Flash over here.

But I must say, I attribute my speed to my new favorite toy. Yes, it's true. I have indeed purchased another tablet. This one's brand new out the box, not some refurbished piece of crap. My sweet little Toshiba R15. It really is great for just about everything I do. Especially since I started fooling around with Z Brush for 3D stuff. I just wish it could have hot keys that you could press and hold, instead of just click. But that doesn't make much difference. I'm still in love all over again.

Oceans away,

-Scott

P.S.: This weeks strip marks the return of Kris Kettner to the strip. You may also know him as Corvair, because he is, in fact, unsafe at any speed.

Yeah, yeah. Long time, no comic. I know. I had it done last week, but we had some problems with the server updates and such. I know it says last week's date. My bad.

Enjoy.

Here is some lovely fan art from a lovely young lady that wishes to remain nameless. We'll... just leave it at that.

Anyways, the comic should be up later on Tuesday. I've still got some coloring to do on it. More later.

Hey everyone. Just a quick comic today. I actually did get a Tablet last week that crapped out on me after two days. Luckily, I hadn't paid for it yet, so I just gave it back to the guy. Anyways, I've been looking more seriously at them lately, but there's one thing that really bugs me. They don't tell you how many levels of pressure sensitivity there are. I mean, Wacom tells you how many each of their products have. What the hell are the specs for the full computers.

It angers me so.

Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the first Dock Boys done entirely without the use of paper. All digital, baby. I love Alias Sketchbook Pro.

Hasta,

-Scott

It's Coming...

Not for a while though.

For those of you who didn't know yet, I recently got an intership at a 3D animation studio here in Kansas City called Bazillion Pictures. I'm really excited about it and started working there last week.

Anyways, I've been teaching myself how to model characters, so hopefully I can do that there sometime soon, and thought a great place to start would be the Dock Boys. Besides, this way I'll be able to rig them up and either make great reference for myself or just make animated shorts featuring your favorite college roommates.

I'm just getting started, but still, I just wanted to show you guys the progress that I've made with trying to convert the Dock Boys characters into 3D. I think the transition is actually going pretty smoothly so far, but we'll see what happens when I get to the face.

I'm really excited about this, and I hope you are too. This doesn't mean the end of the inked and colored strips and such; it's just an extention of the Dock Boys franchise.

Oh, and FYI, since I've taken this internship, I'm going to be working 2 full time jobs for the next month, so there won't be too much going on for a bit. Again, I'm very sorry, but once the Quarked project is done (for me at least), I'll have a bunch of time to work on this after work.

I'm hungry,

-Scott

Batgirl!

Yeah, I'm working on the comic, but I had to jump on this Batgirl Bandwagon. Sorry. Just too much fun.

Well, I promised you a Christmas present and here it is. Your very own Dock Boys wallpaper based on this old school Dock Boys picture. It's formatted for 1024x768 right now, but I'm going to put it in 800x600 later. Jay and I have written a pretty sweet comic that I hope to have up soon, but I'm super crazy busy right now. I should have it up sometime soon. It's all written, so now it's all my fault if we don't have I don't get it up.

Oh, and for Christmas, Pat got me the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah CD. And it's awesome. So, check it out if you get a chance, since I know Pat won't be able to review it until I give him a copy. And God knows that it'll take me forever to do that.

Bon voyage,

Comic'll be up tomorrow. Promise.

January 3, 2006

Well, I'm working on a little Christmas/Holiday present for you all to amend for the lack of comic up on Tuesday. But there will be a new one next week as well as a link to your gift for reading.

Doing the Hustle,

-Scott

Whew. Long comic today, folks. Didn't expect it to take as long as it did. Absolut Craziness.

Jay and I are writing more comics like this now, in a longer format. So, hopefully you like it over the old 3 or 4 panel frames. We figure that we only update once a week (or month it used to seem like), so we might as well give you the best bang for your proverbial buck.

And, in case you missed it last week, we've created a Dock Boys MySpace account. I'll put out bullitins so you know when the newest comic has been updated, and whatever artist Pat is reviewing that week will be playing on the page. So, if you're on MySpace, you should add us. We'll say yes. We're nice like that.

Outtie 2000,

-Scott

PS: I have got to get me one of these!

PPS: If you happened to want to know more about what happened when our server was hacked, you should read Mark's blog from that day. I don't know if there have been any new developments since, but if you're curious, you should as him.

[ Tuesday, December 6th, 2005 | scott ]

Wait for it, wait for it....

Sorry everyone. Almost done with the comic. It'll be up in the afternoon

-Scott

New comic!

I hope you're excited as much as I am. I've switched styles once again, if you'll notice, but I think this one is kind of a strange mix between the old anime style and the newer blocky style. I like it, so I'm keeping it.

And say hello to my girlfriend Katie and my friend Travis in today's strip. You may remember them from earlier episodes here and here.

And during a wee bit of housekeeping, we've now switched servers to Godaddy. We really liked running our own server, but it just became too much of a hassle, especially since Mark and I aren't around enough really to mess with it and make sure it's always working.

Alright, it's great to be back, check later in the week for a Kool-Aid Man CD review, and I swear we'll be here next week.

Forever young,

-Scott

PS: I just set up the Dock Boys MySpace account, so if you're on MySpace, you should add us. We like you. We'll be your friend.

[ Tuesday, July 5th, 2005 | scott ]

Okay. Crazy week.

When I was taking Katie back to her parent's house last week, my car threw a rod, essentially killing it. It was a good car, always good to me. May it rest in peace.

So, as a result, I had to quit my job delivery driving, which I was planning to do anyways, but just not quite as soon. I've moved back to Kansas City, and hopefully I'll have a comic up before I leave with Katie for Nicaragua on Saturday the 30th.

But regardless, I apoligize for my laziness over the summer. I know I've been terrible with the comic and all, but I'll hopefully have some more time when I get back from Nicaragua. Oh well. I'm gonna go watch Lance win.

Later,

-Scott
July 24th

Hey. Yeah, I know that I haven't updated in, well forever, and that this is a serious cop-out, but I've been dicking around with comic book style computer coloring, and thought it was pretty cool. And rest assured that I do have two out of three panels of the next comic inked, and the third one sketched out. I think that it will indeed be great.

But for right now, check out Pat's review of the last Get Up Kids show that was a couple of weeks ago, and I'll do my damnedest to post something new soon.

Later,

-Scott

[ Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 | scott ]

Well, this is new.

Above is a version of Scott created in Flash. I've got another version that moves here. As you can see from the hand (or lack thereof), it's not exactly done.

I've been toying with the idea of putting all the characters into the computer and just doing the whole strip in Flash. Either just making each panel with Flash, or just the line art, or even making the whole thing move. I don't know, though. It's kind of a weird spot to be at. Because I really like the look of the inked characters and stuff in the previous strips. This one seems a little stiff, still. I could ink and scan each part of each character in, but that would take forever.

I don't know. It just seems... strange. I dunno. I'd also almost like to start a storyline. I mean, there have been Dock Boys two- or three-parters, but never a storyline for very long, where you really get to know the characters beyond their self-imposed stereotypes. But then again, I could be overthinking it all.

It's a strange time for me right now. I don't know where to go from here. I just finished college. Got my illustration degree, but I still don't feel like, well, I really know what I'm doing at all. Do I want to do illustration? Animation? Both? Do I need to go back to school? Do I want to go back to school? And what would I go back to school for? Animation or illustration? What kind of animation: 2D or 3D? It's all so frustrating.

And it's only frustrating because I want it all. I want all of it. I want to do everything. I want to write, voice, character design, animate, create the soundtrack for, just freaking BE my own project, but I don't know what I'm supposed to make. It's like all I need is a story that I can believe in, and I'd be set, but I don't have it right now. And so often I feel like a lazy control freak. Someone that wants to everything, but can't find the time to do it. I'm not as self-modivated as I wish I was.

Man, this turned into an interesting rant. Didn't really expect all that. Well, in short, if you have any opinions on the new ideas, shoot me an email or whatever, and if you know of any job opportunites, send them my way as well. And I've got a good comic for next week, so be sure to be here.

Later,

-Scott

[ Tuesday, May 24th, 2005 | scott ]

Okay. No comic yet today. I know, I know. I had a week. But I'm working on something... special. I think you'll all enjoy it. Or I hope you do. I'm very excited about it, and I think it'll be a fun thing for Dock Boys. So, yeah. I hopefully will have the beginnings of it up later today, but my internet's been acting up again. So, in the meantime, check out my illustration site (linked below), and check back later in the week for more info on this new idea.

Oh, and I know that it says that Pat doesn't have a new review, but he posted one of the Rilo Kiley show that I hadn't read, so if you haven't, check it out in his rants section.

Later,

-Scott

Well, finally.

My illustration web site, http://www.scottdrummondillustration.com is finally up and running. It has actually been up for a couple of days, but I just haven't posted anything here about it. But you should go there and take a look around. It's got a bunch of stuff from the Kansan, the Dock Boys graphic novel that Jay and I worked on for a bit, and my robot animation. So check it out. Now. What are you waiting for?

Later,

-Scott

[ Tuesday, May 10th, 2005 | scott ]

Hey everyone. Just updating my little blog thing. I'm chillin' down in Oklahoma right now visiting Jay. He's out to dinner with his sister right now, who's back in town for a few days. Anyways, just thought I'd give all of you an update on what's new.

Got all my stuff done for last Thursday, luckily. I brought a bunch of stuff into KC for the big end-of-the-year senior show in Westport. I'll put a link up to the robot animation that I brought later on, when I get back to Kansas.

Speaking of Kansas, I'll have to start looking for a job soon. But my buddy "Blue Flame" is here, so I'm gonna chill with him.

Later,

-Scott

[ Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005 | scott ]

Hey everyone. Yeah, those dudes in the comic are from my animation I'm working on. They're all fully functional and rock real hard. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this is all gonna look when I'm finished.

And as far as my real band, Chemical Ali, goes, we made it to the finals for the Farmer's Ball, but only placed third, behind Reach and Matt Rice. So congrats to them. But, damn I wish we had gotten some free recording time.

But no fear. We will be going into the studio to record our three newest tracks for a short EP that's sure to rock your face off.

However, all of that will have to wait until next Thursday, my last day of school. I'm freaking out about it. But I'm pretty confident that I can finish everything by then. I hope.

Later,

-Scott

[ Tuesday, April 26th, 2005 | scott ]

Hey there kiddies. Just hanging out up at school waiting for class to start. I probably should be working on my robot animation, but I'm a little lazy right now. I don't really have time to get into working on it right now. If I started it, I wouldn't want to leave to go to class.

But I've got less than a month until I graduate. A little freaked out about it, but I think everyone is. I really can't decide what to do come the end of summer. I don't know if I should stick around in Lawrence, move to Kansas City or just ditch the midwest in general. I'm really not too keen on sticking around in Kansas, but I want to for a little while at least. I've got Katie, friends, the bands. Things are pretty good here.

But they won't be if I can't find a good job and be happy with what I do on a daily basis. And there is no way in hell that I'm going to be workking at a place like Jade Garden for more than a month. I'm done working crap jobs. I've gotta get a real one.

So, if you know anywhere that is looking for illustrators and/or animators, shoot me an email. It'd be much appreciated.

Alright, I lied. I'm gonna work on my robots now. I've gotta get this keyboard player to tickle some electronic ivories.

Later,

-Scott

[ Tuesday, April 19th, 2005 | scott ]

First off, I must say that this strip was inspired by Katie and my friend John, though not the John that has appeared in the comic before. He'd kill me if I didn't give a shout-out to him for taking his wittiness and running with it, so thanks, John. But I must admit, John did not have the sexual connotation in mind when he coined this phrase. I just thought it'd be funnier.

Alright, time to work on my game board for color class. I'm making a version of Risk that involves taking over gang territories in New York instead of continents throughout the world.

Later,
-Scott

[ Tuesday, April 12th, 2005 | scott ]

Hey everyone. Hope you enjoy the comic. I'm just animating away here. I've found that I absolutely love Flash animation. It's so much fun. And so simple, too. I could work on this forever. And maybe I will.

I must say, I'm in a bit of a disagreement with Pat's final rating of the new Beck album. I absolutely love it, and would give it at least 4 Kool-Aid men.

Alright, kiddies, I've gotta get back to work. See ya next week.

-Scott

[ Tuesday, April 5th, 2005 | scott ]

Hey, sorry about comic tardiness again. I had it done, it ran in the paper, I just forgot to upload it, because I'm a dumbass. Anyways, if you're not doing anything on Sunday, you're wrong. You're coming to the Chemical Ali show at the Jackpot Saloon in Lawrence. 10th and Massachusettes. Be there. Or else.
Check out the new Gorillaz video. One day I'll make something half as cool as this. One day.
Month to go before all my shit is due. I'm screwed.
-Scott
Oh, and when this comic came out on Tuesday in the paper, Brett wore her Star Trek shirt to class. God, I love it.

[ Tuesday, March 29th, 2005 | scott ]

Oh, KU basketball... We kid because we care.
Well, Spring Break is over, and I didn't get done as much as I should have. A sad day for everyone. Okay, so maybe just for me, but that's okay. All is well in my world other than I'm broke and have lots of stuff left to do before the end of the semester.

My band Chemical Ali is playing some shows coming up, so you should come to those. They're both up in Lawrence at the Jackpot Saloon at 10th and Massachusettes. The first is on April 10th, and the next is on April 29th. The 29th show is part of KJHK's Farmer's Ball, which is like a battle of the bands thing, so definately come and cheer us on for that. And the 10th is my girlfriend Katie's birthday, so you should come to that and wish her a better birthday than watching her boyfriend going into epileptic seizures onstage while playing notes on his bass guitar.

This week, Pat's got a review of The Ugly Organ by one of my favorite bands of all time, Cursive. Oh, Cursive. I do love thee. However, I have been known to be constantly listening to Death From Above 1979 and Spoon lately. But if you haven't heard the Ugly Organ, well, Pat can tell you if you should.

Oh, yeah. One more thing. There's going to be a new feature coming soon to the Dock Boys web site. Yes, on top of Pat's stellar music reviews, we are going to have Mark do what he does best for all of you. Yes, that's right. Load up your email accounts and send Mark all of your relationship questions and he will post his advice for you right here on DockBoys.net. Just shoot him an email at putpsudonymhere@aol.com and all of your most personal questions can be answered for all to see.

Well, back to the ridiculous amount of work I have to do before I can think about graduating. Ahh! It's that word again! Make it go away...
Later,
-Scott

[ Tuesday, March 8th, 2005 | scott ]

Sorry, everyone. I'm hyper-busy this week. Got a big project in color class due on Thursday. It involves painting. Actual painting. I haven't painted in two years. It will look terrible. But after this, thankfully, I'll be able to use the computer and these projects won't take more than 30 billion hours like this one seems to be.

So, instead of reading my comic, you should check out one of my favorites. Hit up Instant Classic and check out the continuation of the Prologue that's now up. Or if you haven't read the Prologue, read that. It's really good. Or Applegeeks is new today, so check those guys out.

Oh, yeah. And you may have noticed the Google banner to your left (my right). You should check out the links there, specifically taylored for your enjoyment. And I get money when you click on them. Not very much money, but some is better than none.

Alright, I'm out.

Later,
-Scott

[ Tuesday, March 1st, 2005 | scott ]

Hello, everyone. Well, I'm back this week with another rant. I hope you enjoyed reading Pat's section last week, since he'll now be doing one regularly for the strip. This week he's talking about the William Shatner album that came out a little while back. I certainly enjoy it, but I'll let him tell you all about it.

Anyways, lately I've been putting more effort into the comic, and I think that it shows. I really love rendering the backgrounds and I'm really actually having fun with it again. I'm learning new ways to do things instead of just going through the motions like I had been in the past. In short, I'm having a lot of fun.

Oh, yeah. I did a fun little fake movie trailer for school that you should check out for a laugh. I think you'll enjoy it. It was basically an excercise in using Adobe After Effects and iMovie. Good times.

And if you're really bored, you should check out this game. It's quite the addicting little flash game, but lots of fun. Thank you, Dom.

Alright, that about wraps it up for this week. Like usual, I've got lots of homework and lots of band stuff going on, so I'll catch you guys later.
-Scott

PS: I’ve started a Dock Boys update email list, so if you want to get an email every time I post a new Dock Boys send an email with the subject as “Update” to dockboysupdate@gmail.com.

[ Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005 | scott ]

(Note: This week's rant is going to be done by Pat, as Jay is all together to busy to help write the comic and construct a blog. Besides, blogs are silly and outdated. Thank you and enjoy)

[ Tuesday, February 15th, 2005 | scott ]

Well, happy Valentine's Day, everyone. I guess, technically, it was yesterday, but who's counting? Anyways, I thought that it'd be fun to do a Valentine's Day strip for this week, so I called up Jay and we worked this one out. It's always great to talk to Jay on the phone. Now that he's in the ol' Oklahoma, well, let's just say it's not the same here in L-town without him.
But Jay's doing well down in Norman, and he sends his hellos. He's been quite busy since law school started and hasn't been able to update his rant section in a while. Ain't no thing, but now that my brother Mark has made it easier to upload comics and rants and stuff, hopefully you'll be hearing from him more often.
I've changed the style again slightly for this strip. The bodies of the characters aren't tiny like in the last couple, which I think is a change for the better. I've also done a little more with the inking before I scan the line art. I think that I rely too much on the colors to carry the visuals, and not the inks, which is a mistake. Besides, I love inking. What can I say? I'm a born tracer.
I also ditched the photos this time. Not entirely happy with the backgrounds, but I like the soft feel that they have. All in all, I'm pretty happy with this strip. I think it's the direction I'd like to take the Dock Boys. And speaking of taking the Dock Boys places, Jay and I were talking about maybe getting a nice book published of all the strips that we've done over the past three years. I'd really love to do it if people would buy it, so if you are interested you should send me an email. We were talking about making comments on each page with each strip and including early sketches of characters and such. I think it would be a lot of fun.
Alright, well I've gotta do some homework. See you all next week.
-Scott

[ Tuesday, February 1st, 2005 | scott ]

Alrighty. Another week, another comic strip. As you might be able to tell, I'm doing some style expiramentations with this strip. I've been doing some sketches that are similar to the style I was working with for the animation project, and so now I'm just seeing how they work with the Dock Boys. I'm still not entirely happy with it. I'd like to do more with background painting instead of just tossing in photos. I'm kind of getting sick of that. It just seems like such a cop out. I just need to start working on these earlier and not try to shit them out in three hours.
Anyway, we've been making some changes to the web site lately. Nothing too visual, just code stuff so it runs smoother for you guys. Mark's been a huge help over the past week or so, so thanks so much to him.
This week also mark the return of John, from the With the Band comic that I used to do. This pretty much really happened a week or two ago, and I thought it was probably the funniest fucking thing I've heard in a while. Maybe you had to be there. I'm not really sure, nor do I really care. But it's good to have John back, even if it is for a guest appearance. And I really would like to restart the whole With the Band strip over, just not while I'm still in school. This semester's gonna be freaking crazy, so I don't want to get in over my head.
Well, that's all I've got for now. See ya next Tuesday.
-Scott

[ Tuesday, January 25th, 2005 | scott ]

Well, folks welcome to another semester of the good ol' Dock Boys. Things are falling into place and another schedule of classes are upon us. Or, if you failed out last semester, a new schedule for work is upon you. But that's not really the point. The point is that the break is over and I'm ready to start doing comics again. So without further ado, a personal update.
The Graphic Novel: What to say... I got the first 15 pages done like I planned. I don't have a final cover yet, but I have some ideas. It'll end up being about 60 pages all in all when it's done, but I'm kinda burnt out on it at the moment, so I'm gonna let it simmer for a little bit. And then maybe add some butter and Allspice and make it taste real good. Oo, and some crushed red pepper.
All in all, I'm happy with how it's turning out. I think I'm going to make a special section for it on the site sometime soon, so you'll be able to check it out. Or at least some of it.
Animation: Well, the Quark project is done. We finished that sucker up last week, and it was well received at the meeting that our teacher went to about it. But just as that door closes, the semester starts and it just so happens that one of the classes I'm taking this semester is an animation class. I'm really pretty excited about it. But I still need to come up with a concept for my animation, so I was thinking I could do a music video for one of my bands' songs. Check them out www.myspace.com/chemicalali and www.myspace.com/theantirobotleague and email me if you think any one would be the best. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and I know the links don't work. We're sorting all that out right now.
Well, that's it. See ya next week.
-Scott
